No. 5 Rangers fall to No. 9 Maryville in battle of unbeatens

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 5 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team suffered its first hiccup of 2024 on Saturday, falling by an 18-6 final to No. 9 Maryville University at the Regis Turf Fields.

Saturday's result was the first loss of the spring for the Rangers (4-1 overall) in what was its first ever matchup against fellow Midwest regional foe Maryville (8-0 overall).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis would score the game's opening goal at the 13:23 mark of the first quarter, courtesy of sophomore midfielder Shea Murphy, but was unable to build any early momentum as the visiting Saints rattled off the next seven goals to take a 7-1 lead entering the final minute of the period.

The Rangers would trim the deficit to 7-2 in the waning seconds as senior midfielder Lily Ferguson netted a free position goal with 41 ticks remaining.

Graduate student midfielder Bailey Truex and junior midfielder Megan Bunker each scored goals at the 6:57 and 5:34 marks of the second quarter, respectively, that brought the Rangers back within four at 8-4.

Maryville would own a 9-4 lead at the break and then built its cushion with a 7-0 scoring run in the third quarter that put the game out of reach.

Truex led all Regis players with two goals scored, while fellow graduate student Gabby Rothermund and Murphy joined her with two points on the afternoon with one goal and one assist apiece.

GAME NOTES
  • Maryville finished 7-for-11 on free position shots while the Rangers were 4-for-8.
