No. 7 Rangers honor seniors with 16-7 win over rival Colorado Mesa, clinch RMAC regular season title

DENVER, Colo. — On an afternoon where the No. 7 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team honored its six graduating seniors and graduate students, the Rangers added another bullet point to the laundry list of accolades as they secured the RMAC regular season championship with a 16-7 victory over rival Colorado Mesa.

With the victory, the Rangers (14-1 overall, 8-0 RMAC) go up two full games over the second place Mavericks (8-5 overall, 7-2 RMAC) and secure the head-to-head tiebreaker with two games remaining in the regular season.

Sunday's victory makes it five straight RMAC regular season championships for the program, while the graduating class earned its seventh RMAC title between the regular season and RMAC Tournament crowns. Regis is a staggering 62-6 overall the past four seasons with the current senior class — Gabby Rothermund, Lily Ferguson, Sarah Hanson, Elizabeth Myotte, Bailey Truex and Tia Krats — and looking to add on when the postseason rolls around in May.

"Hearing those numbers, it's incredible. I think each of them can be extremely proud of the career they've had and I know they want even more when we get to the postseason," said Regis head coach, Sarah Kellner. "That 62-6 record is a testament to the work those young women have put in at practice and the extra work they've put in. This year's class is really special. We have three true four-year seniors and then some girls who were here and lost a season to the Covid year. Two classes on their own, but one really strong core of leaders that all brought something unique to this team."

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the third straight home game in a row, the Rangers set the tone early as they held a 9-1 lead at the end of the first quarter on Sunday, including an 8-0 scoring run to close the quarter aided by four woman-up goals.

Truex scored three of her four goals of the afternoon in the first quarter, while sophomore Maggie Schipfer added two of her game-high five goals. Schipfer now currently holds the team lead for goals scored this season at 46, just one ahead of Truex.

Regis outscored opponents 24-1 in the first quarter during its final three-game home stand.

"I was really proud and pleased with the team's effort throughout the game, but especially in that first quarter. That is something we've really been focused on, getting off to fast starts, which we had struggled a little bit to do in some games this year. It kind of took us awhile to get going," Kellner said. "But in these last couple games, we've gotten off to tremendous starts and every player on the field has been ready to go."

Assisting on three of those first quarter goals for the Rangers was Rothermund, who became the Regis women's lacrosse program's all-time assists leader with 130, passing graduate assistant coach and former teammate, Kyleigh Peoples.

"Gabby has amazing vision and a very high lacrosse IQ. She came in, kind of quarterbacked our offense in 2020 as a freshman before the year got cut short. She does a great job leading our team, leading our offense," Kellner said. "We were talking as coaches in the office this week and Kyleigh is probably happier for Gabby than anyone. Records are meant to be broken and, as a coach, she's really proud as am I."

Colorado Mesa would never recover from the Rangers' first-quarter blitz as Regis would hold 11-goal leads on three separate occasions to methodically earn the 16-7 victory.

Ferguson was the third Regis player to net a hat trick on Sunday, scoring three goals on just four shot attempts, while sophomore Lauren Sheets added two goals.

Rothermund and sophomore Shea Murphy rounded out the Regis scoring with one goal and three assists apiece.

Defensively, Regis limited Colorado Mesa to just 14 total shot attempts — only four in the first half — and won the draw control battle, 18-7, led by junior Megan Bunker with nine.

Myotte made four saves en route to picking up her 12th win of the season while junior defenseman Terah Skillings paced all Rangers with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will now prepare for the final weekend of the regular season with road trips to Fort Lewis College (1 p.m. Friday) and Colorado State University Pueblo (12 p.m. Sunday).

"At this point of the year, we know all of our strategies and what we're trying to do. It's just refining those, tightening things up and increasing our focus as we get closer to the postseason," Kellner said. "The girls have a lot to do at the end of the school year with finals and graduation, but they always have a vision of playing in May for as long as possible. We'll enjoy this time being together and playing on this last road trip and I think that's the sentiment they have too."
