Hot Start, Clutch Finish Give Regis Two Wins

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Regis University Baseball team secured a series win over New Mexico Highlands University with a doubleheader win on Saturday afternoon, 13-4 and 9-8. The Rangers improve to 17-27-2 (8-18-1 RMAC), while the Cowboys fall to 10-35 (5-22 RMAC).

GAME ONE

Regis wasted no time jumping out to a big first inning lead, as Linus Fleek led off the game with a single. Then Ethan Wood started a run of extra base hits, as his double scored Fleek, then Wood scored on Bobo Iandoli's double. Park Romney's double brought him home, and Romney was batted in by Ayden Harrison's triple. Harrison scored on a grounder RBI from Nicholai Arnold, the fifth run of the first.

Wood doubled again to lead off the third, and scored on Romney's single. Highlands left two runners on in the third, but scored their first run in the fourth with a triple followed by an RBI ground ball. RU got that run back and more in the fifth, with a solo homerun by Iandoli, and an Arnold double bringing in Romney. The bottom of the frame saw three hits and an RU error allow three NMHU runs to score.

The Rangers added a handful of insurance runs in the final inning, starting with an Ethan Wood single, followed by Iandoli being hit by a pitch. Harrison's single scored them both, and Arnold singled again. Dylan Hearn reached on an error to lead the bases, and Harrison scored on a wild pitch. Arnold scored on another WP, and George Smith's grounder scored Hearn, pushing the lead to 13-4. The quick outs in the bottom ended the game.

Wood launched a solo homer in the third, but Highlands battled back in the fourth, recording five hits, including three doubles, to score four runs. The Rangers tied the game in the fifth, as Jack Moulin's double scored Smith, and Iandoli's single brought in Moulin.

In the bottom of the fifth, NMHU took back the lead, earning three more runs on three more hits. They pushed the lead to 8-4 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
